Flu in South Dakota: 3,000 cases are 'tip of the iceberg'

State epidemiologist expects '10 times that many'

BROOKINGS The flu's in the news. The Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta report that 41 states have widespread outbreaks. South Dakota is not one of those 41 states.

But don't consider that good news. Dr. Lon Kightlinger, state epidemiologist for the South Dakota Department of Health, told the Register Monday, "Right now we're experiencing one of the earliest influenza season's that we've had in many, many years; that's not counting the pandemic of 2009, because that was a different event."
