BROOKINGS – While South Dakotans were out doing their Christmas shopping, so were the scammers of the world, and they found a target in Brookings County, according to Sgt. Jon Pike.
A rural Brookings woman is out nearly $4,000 this week, Pike said, after she became a victim of a secret shopper scam.
The woman told the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office Friday that she was apparently the victim of an Internet scam. She had signed up on a secret shopper website and subsequently received a check for nearly $4,000, presumably to make store purchases.
