It turned out to be a stellar year for area volleyball as a pair of teams advanced deep into their respective state tournaments with a talented core of players.
Sioux Valley, led by All-Register Player of the Year Haley Hillestad and All-Register players Kaylee VanderWal and Johanna Fuhr, finished in its highest spot ever with a third-place effort at the Class A State Volleyball Tournament.
Arlington, led by All-Register players Samantha Boeck, Brett Heuer and Brooke Hennrich, carried on the tradition of excellence as the Cardinals knocked off top-seeded Parker in the semifinal round of the Class B State Tournament en route to a second-place finish to Warner.
Elkton-Lake Benton, led by All-Register player Gabby Kampmann, posted a 28-5 season record as the Lady Elks lost in the Region 3A championship to eventual State A champion Sioux Falls Christian.
Brookings, led by All-Register players Mack Rief, Amelia Miller and Emily Johnson, started the season strong with a 7-2 record en route to a 12-8 regular-season finish, but the ‘Cats faltered in postseason play with two straight losses to end their season.
Oldham-Ramona/Rutland, led by All-Register player Taylor Stratton, put up a 20-6 regular-season mark, before the Lady Raiders fell in the District 4B title game to Chester Area.
Estelline, led by All-Register player Erin Begalka, finished with a 5-18 regular-season record, but the Lady Redmen pulled off back-to-back upsets of Great Plains Lutheran and De Smet in District 3B play before falling to Arlington in the district title game.
