The South Dakota Outdoor Adventure Center (SDOAC) is becoming a reality, and project leaders and program supporters gathered Wednesday afternoon to break ground for the multimillion-dollar recreation facility.
Seen here, little David Pickard decided to give Grandpa a hand with some shovelwork of his own following the afternoon ceremony at the Dakota Nature Park site. “Grandpa” Jim Pickard has headed the fundraising committee for the center since public efforts began in 2009, and he led his teammates in turning the first shovels of earth at the building site Wednesday.
Originally conceived as a home for the county’s 4-H shooting sports program – including archery, rifle and pistol shooting – the Adventure Center’s mission has been expanded to include a variety of activities for a multigenerational audience. The South Dakota 4-H Foundation was an early supporter of the project and has helped lead fundraising efforts.
