Downtown building takes shape

“Repurposing” is taking on a whole new meaning in downtown Brookings this fall as workmen convert the former NorthWestern Energy headquarters into a pub and condo. Shown discussing the work last week are building owner and developer Brian Gatzke (left) and brew pub principal Seth Koch, both of Brookings.

Over the past several weeks, crews have fortified the building with steel beams and concrete block, adding two new floors to the Fifth Street structure.

While a large chunk of the ground level will become the Wooden Legs microbrewery, the upper floors are being finished as upscale, loft-style condominiums. A public events center, tentatively called The Warehouse, will occupy first-floor space next door to the brew pub.

The Wooden Legs Brewing Company is set to open March 1, 2013, while the nine upper-level condos will be available for occupancy by May 15, Gatzke said.

The building will retain its brick facing in the commercial areas, but the upper levels will be clad in metal or lap-style siding. The structure is located at 311 Fifth St.
