No consensus on ‘conditional use’

• Councilors keep studying revised ordinance, but some say changes not necessary

BROOKINGS – The Brookings City Council spent the better part of one council session with public and staff testimony and then nearly an hour at Tuesday’s study session discussing the topic, but city leaders seem no closer to ending their debate over conditional use permits than they were a month ago.

The modified city ordinance is expected to come up for a reading Dec. 4, after having been tabled recently for some council-directed retooling. At that time, the council will have the option of voting on the measure or killing it by simply “leaving it on the table.”

This week’s council debate ended in a stalemate, however, with several council members still insisting that “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” and several others appearing to agree with staff-suggested changes.
