VERMILLION – Undefeated Sioux Falls Washington scored 21 unanswered points to close out the game, overcoming 454 passing yards by Brandon Valley quarterback Chase Marso during a 35-20 victory over the Lynx in the Class 11AA football championship game on Saturday night at the DakotaDome.
Trailing 20-14 late in the third, Sam Cooke took an option pitch and scampered 57 yards to the end zone with just 42 seconds left in the third. Reagan Stenzel’s PAT kick gave the Warriors the lead for good at 21-20.
The Warriors controlled the fourth quarter. Jon Hander hit Grant Larson for a 28-yard touchdown pass with 8:36 left to make it 28-20. After the Lynx turned the ball over on downs, Washington struck on the next play from scrimmage when cornerback/wide receiver Nate Gerry broke off a 42-yard run with 6:46 to go to close out the scoring.
