VERMILLION – Tri-Valley won the statistical battle, but the ball bounced Winner’s way as the Warriors rallied for a 13-6 win in the Class 11B State Championship.
The Mustangs amassed 274 yards of offense – 235 rushing and 39 passing – as they held a 29:10-18:50 advantage in time of possession, but it was a 62-yard fumble return for a touchdown midway through the third quarter that salted the game away for Winner.
Tri-Valley opened the scoring with a 4-yard pass from Brett Page to Dominick Burggraff with 7:07 left in the first half. The extra-point kick was no good as the Mustangs took a 6-0 lead into the locker room.
Winner took advantage of Tri-Valley’s second-half kickoff going out of bounds as the Warriors started from their own 44-yard line.
