Avis Marcella (VanderWaal) Rowbotham, 81, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012
She was born Oct. 27, 1931 in Volga with her twin sister, Agnus. Avis was one of seven children born to Amanda and John VanderWaal.
After high school in 1951 Avis worked as a hospital aide in Brookings, where she met and married George Rowbotham, her husband of 61 years. In 1960 Avis and George adopted a son, Ronald in Minneapolis. After moving to Bellevue, Wash. in 1961, they adopted a daughter, Renee. The family joined Cross of Christ Lutheran Church as founding members in 1962. Avis loved music and enjoyed singing in the church choir. Avis was also an active member in her church circle. Avis was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2006. Avis fought a courageous battle, with her husband George by her side the whole time. Avis's family, her children and grandchildren were the highlights of her life, and their lives have been immensely enriched by having had Avis as their loving wife, sister, mother, and grandmother.
