Evelyn M. Scholten - Brookings April 3, 1925 – Nov. 6, 2012

Posted: Friday, Nov 9th, 2012

Evleyn M. Scholten, 87, died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012, at the United Living Center in Brookings.

Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Brookings. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Rude’s Funeral Home.

She was the third child born to Adrianus and Johanna Kuyper, on April 3, 1925, in Corsica. The highlights of Evelyn’s life included her religious education and catechism and her graduation from Pleasant Lake Consolidated and Gardener Schools in Aurora County. She obtained a teaching certificate from Springfield College after graduation and later, in 1947, received her RN degree from the Sioux Valley School of Nursing in Sioux Falls.

Evelyn married Marvin Milton Scholten on May 27, 1948, at a ceremony at the First Reformed Church in Harrison. She and Marvin raised four children, Judy (Justin Poland) Scholten (Bangor), June Ellman (Charlottesville), Bill (Lisa) Scholten (Brookings) and Marc Scholten (Juneau).

As a child, Evelyn loved riding her horse Molly, doing tasks at school, such as running the flag up the flagpole and cleaning chalk off the boards. She loved roasting potatoes in the ashes of the stove, eating wild onions, making greeting cards and arranging flowers. She was a Sunday school teacher, had a beautiful singing voice and donated her skills as a nurse during polio and flu epidemics. Evelyn was Marvin's wife and helpmate. She worked as an RN while her husband Marvin first obtained a bachelor's degree and master’s degree. She provided the meaningful stability to her family while Marvin was away obtaining his doctorate in education. Her talent, religious commitment and nursing skills greatly enriched the lives of her family and friends.

She is survived by her four children; a sister, Lena Vanderwal and a brother, Ivan Kuyper (Jean), both of Corsica; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Ernest and John; and a sister, Margaret (Stan) Hoekman.

Condolences may be sent to the family through www.rudesfuneralhome.com.
