Doris Johnson, 89, formerly of Flandreau, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012 , at Good Samaritan Luther Manor in Sioux Falls.
Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Messiah Lutheran Church in Flandreau. Burial is in Lone Rock Cemetery. Visitation begins Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the church.
Doris was born April 7, 1923 at Flandreau to Edward and Alice (Gunderson) Ovrid.
She attended Juve Country School and graduated from Egan High School in 1941.
Doris taught school in Moody County and then worked at the Los Angeles Port of Embarkation in California during World War II. Doris married Joel L. Johnson on Dec. 22, 1946, at Flandreau. Together they farmed southeast of Flandreau and were blessed with three wonderful boys.
Doris taught Sunday school at Lone Rock Church and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Flandreau for many years.
They moved into Flandreau on Sept. 3, 1982, and then moved to Sioux Falls on April 5, 1998, due to Joel’s health and to be near their children.
Joel died on May 20, 2003.
She is survived by her children Douglas and Glenn of Sioux Falls; a daughter-in-law, Lynette of Sioux Falls; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn Armijo of Huntington Beach, Calif.; sisters-in-law, Bernice and Hilda, cousins, Boyd, Reva and Donna, with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her oldest son, Senior Correctional Officer Ronald “RJ” Johnson, E.O.W. 4-12-11, and her parents.
