• Deubrook Area beats Howard, 25-22, for Class 9AA title

VERMILLION – Ryan Knutson struck again and Deubrook Area capped a historic season with a Class 9AA state football title, dropping Howard 25-22 on Thursday afternoon at the DakotaDome.

The senior running back broke free for touchdown runs of 62 and 63 yards on the Dolphins’ first two possessions to stake his team to a 14-0 lead at the 6:04 mark of the opening quarter. At halftime, he had 243 yards on 13 carries, setting up Deubrook’s other two scores in a dominant opening half.

“We thought if we could get him to the edge and get him some holes early, that he could take some long ones to the house – and he did,” said Deubrook Area head coach Adolph Shepardson, whose team finished 12-0 while winning the first state football title in school history. “Our kids played phenomenal in the first half. …
