BROOKINGS – Windy and wet weather greeted Brookings area residents as they woke up this morning. The precipitation is especially welcome and more would be welcomed, with winter coming upon us fast.
Winter is closer than we think. The winter solstice, the shortest day of the year in terms of daylight, is Dec. 21. But climatologists, including South Dakota state climatologist Dennis Todey, tend to see Dec. 1 as the real start of winter.
Tying moisture, or the lack of it, to the Dec. 1 climatological view of winter, he noted that near that date the soil is likely to be frozen.
