BROOKINGS – Two Brookings volunteers received selective national recognition recently for their work in the community.

Alice Chu, a retiree, and Mark Shoup, a manufacturing manager, were recognized by their employer, 3M, with the Community Volunteer Award.

Only 15 active employees and 10 retirees from 3M plants throughout the United States are selected each year. Brookings has had only three recipients in the past: Verna Sturdevant, Shirley Peterson and Ron Deutsch. Recipients are selected by a panel of community leaders representing various types of non-profit organization.

The award comes with $1,000 to be donated to the recipients’ non-profit of choice. Shoup and Chu presented these checks Thursday to Hillcrest Elementary School and Boys & Girls Club of Brookings.
