Agnes Spilde - Lake Preston: May 12, 1913 Oct. 9, 2012

Posted: Friday, Oct 12th, 2012

Agnes Sofia Gustafson, 99, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, with family at her bedside at Dow Rummel Village in Sioux Falls.

Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at the North Preston Lutheran Church with the Rev. Wanda McNeill officiating. Burial is in the church cemetery. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. on Friday at the Johnson-Henry Funeral Chapel in Lake Preston and preceding services in the church on Saturday.

Agnes Sofia Gustafson was born May 12, 1913, to John and Rachel (Braaten) Gustafson on a farm near Bryant. She grew up and was educated in the Bryant area through the ninth grade. On June 9, 1936, she married Leander Spilde in the Lake Preston Lutheran Parsonage. Agnes and Leander farmed for several years on the Spilde homestead near Badger. Later they moved to an acreage in Lake Preston. Agnes was the dietician at the nursing home in Lake Preston for many years until her retirement.

Agnes pursued many hobbies including baking lefse, quilting, crocheting, gardening, card playing, dominos, or any activity that involved her many friends and family. The joy of her life included children and grandchildren, brothers and sisters, her church family, and community friends who frequently visited the Spilde home.

Due to the care provided to Agnes at the Silver Plains Assisted Living, she was given five years of quality life and companionship with the residents and staff from 2007-2012.

While Agnes feared the notion of living in Sioux Falls, she truly enjoyed her final months at Dow Rummel Village surrounded by family and new friends, where she moved after her 99th birthday.

She is survived by a sister, Florence Brenden; her children, LeRoy (Dora) Spilde of Castleton, N.D, Carol (Floyd) Prouty of Sioux Falls and Leland (Diane) Spilde of Ramona, seven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews and special friends the Chov family.

Agnes was preceded in death by five brothers, Arvid, Herbert, George, Clarence, and John Elmer, and a sister, Ruth.

The family requests memorials be directed to the North Preston Lutheran Church.
