• ‘Experience counts,’ says longtime legislator

BROOKINGS – Steve Street says one of his greatest accomplishments in four terms in the state Legislature was to raise his constituents’ taxes.

“I hate to brag about a tax increase,” he says with a smile, but it was Street’s efforts that resulted in a $30-million-a-year road-funding bonanza for counties and townships.

It wasn’t actually a tax hike – it was a fee increase on license plates, Street says as he campaigns for a new position in the South Dakota Senate.
