MITCHELL – Brookings’ Kayde Bartels had the biggest highlight of the day, making a hole-in-one during the first round of the Class AA state boys’ golf tournament at the par-72 Lakeview Golf Course.

The sophomore aced the 176-yard, par-3 third hole – his 12th hole of the day – using a 6-iron.

In the team standings, Brookings is in 12th after a round of 342.

“I wished it would have been a little bit lower, to be honest with you,” said Brookings head coach Bill Scholten. “We’re only a couple shots behind Pierre and Sturgis. I was hoping we would shoot around 335 or so and they didn’t quite get there.

“So hopefully (Tuesday) we can pick up a little bit of ground and not lose any ground.”

Sioux Falls Lincoln opened with a 299 and has a three-shot lead over Sioux Falls O’Gorman (302). Yankton (308) is in third, while Aberdeen Central and Brandon Valley are tied for fourth at 312.

Patriot sophomore Tommy Vining took a one-shot lead individually after an even-par 72. Teammate Parker Klitzke opened with a 73.

Five golfers are tied for third at 74 – Sioux Falls O’Gorman’s Collin Hammer and Max Donohue, Yankton’s Jace Guthmiller, Aberdeen Central’s Thomas Hogg and Rapid City Central’s Noah Fenske.

O’Gorman’s Chris Gaher is another shot back in eighth at 75; while Yankton’s Logan Megard, Rapid City Stevens’ Sam Musch and Sturgis’ Tate McVay are tied for ninth after carding 76s.

Rounding out the Patriots’ team score on Day 1, Ben Prisbe and Cole Peterson are among a five-way tie for 12th at 77. Also for the Knights, Nick Bruhn completed the team score with a 79, putting him in a tie for 25th.

Bobcat junior Jake Steen led the team with a round of 80, putting him in a tie for 28th. Steen had nine-hole scores of 39 and 41.

Jace Collins is in a tie for 52nd at 84 (42-42), while Bartels and Matt Eng are in a tie for 70th at 89. Bartels shot a 48 on the back nine to open the round, before closing with a 41 on the front. Eng shot 43-46.

Also for Brookings, Derek Axelsen is tied for 86th at 97 (49-48) and Dalton Axelsen is tied for 88th at 98 (49-49).

The tournament concludes with another 18-hole round today.
