BROOKINGS – A Brookings teenager this week has been elected national president of Family, Career and Comm-unity Leaders of America.

Elliot Johnson, son of Marty and the Rev. Teri Johnson, was installed into office at FCCLA’s 2012 national leadership conference in Orlando on Wednesday, Brookings FCCLA adviser Jolene Dunbar says.

The Brookings High School Commons will be the site of a welcome home reception for Johnson this weekend. The public is invited to come out and help congratulate him from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Dunbar says Johnson, who will be a senior this coming school year, has been involved in FCCLA since he was a freshman. He is a three-year officer of the Brookings chapter.

FCCLA is a nonprofit national career and technical student organization for young men and women in Family and Consumer Sciences education in public and private school through grade 12.

Today more than 205,000 members in nearly 6,500 chapters are active in a network of associations in 50 states, including the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

Chapter projects focus on a variety of youth concerns, including teen pregnancy, parenting, family relationships, substance abuse, peer pressure, environment, nutrition and fitness, teen violence, and career exploration.
