A distracted driver rolled his SUV into a cornfield on the southeastern edge of Brookings Tuesday afternoon.
Forty-six-year-old Daniel Schoonhoven of Brookings was transported to the hospital with unknown injuries following the accident near the intersection of 22nd Avenue South and 32nd Street South.
Brookings Police Lt. Derrick Powers said Schoonhoven was traveling south on 22nd Avenue shortly before 2:30 p.m. Tuesday when he was looking at something in the passenger side of his 1999 Chevy Blazer.
That’s when Schoonhoven left the roadway, entering the west ditch on the north side of 32nd Street. The Blazer struck a wooden post and continued south, traveling across 32nd and into the ditch on the south side of the road.
Powers said the SUV came to the edge of a cornfield and rolled, landing on its top.
Schoonhoven was alone in his vehicle at the time of the crash and was wearing his seatbelt. He was cited for careless driving and no insurance. No damage estimate was immediately available.
