Bullets 16 sweep S.F. East

SIOUX FALLS – The Bullets 16 swept Sioux Falls East in a VFW Teener baseball doubleheader on Tuesday at Harmodon Field to improve to 11-2 on the season.

The opener had plenty of suspense as Brookings jumped out to a 2-0 lead and hung on for a 3-2 win, and then the Bullets pounded East, 20-2, in the nightcap.

Brookings travels to Aberdeen on Thursday to face Post 42 in a 5:30 p.m. twin bill at Fossum Field.



Game 1

• Brookings 3, S.F. East 2

Starting pitcher Jordan Lerdal helped his own cause as he tripled to lead off the second inning, and Bryce McMacken picked up an RBI with a sacrifice to stake the Bullets to a 1-0 lead.

Brookings added to its lead in the second as Carter Roach reached on an error and later scored on Kyle Krogman’s groundout.

East had a pair of hits to plate a run in the third to cut the Bullets’ lead in half.

Sam Schutt led off the fifth inning with his second base hit of the game; advanced to second on an error and moved to third on a stolen base before scoring on Roach’s groundball out to make it 3-1, Bullets.

Sioux Falls sent seven batters to the plate in the sixth inning but could only come away with a single run as Trevor Hornig came on in relief and stranded three East base-runners for the final margin.

Game 2

• Brookings 20, S.F. East 2

After East took advantage of a Brookings’ error to plate a run in the bottom of the opening frame, it was all Bullets after that as they scored 20 runs in the their next four at-bats – including nine in the third – to end the game via the run rule.

Several Bullets finished with multiple hits, including extra base hits by Krogman, Lerdal, Schutt, Jon Lehman and Mack Burns, who also earned the win on the mound.
