AUSTIN, Texas – South Dakota State wrapped up the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships West Preliminary on Saturday on the campus of Texas
Senior Jared Vlastuin, who qualified for the NCAA finals in the men’s long jump on Thursday, finished 26th in the high jump Saturday with a mark of 6 feet 9 3/4 inches. Kansas State’s Erik Kynard cleared 7-2 1/2 to win the event.
Senior Jake Brinkmann was 28th in the men’s discus. Minnesota’s Dominique Howard was tops in the event with a heave of 183-3.
Junior Brooke Garner ended up 30th in the women’s hammer throw with a toss of 188-1. UNLV’s Amanda Bingson won with a mark of 233-1.
Notes: On Thursday, Vlastuin qualified for the finals in the long jump after finishing 10th with a mark of 25-3 1/2. The 2012 NCAA finals are June 6-9 at Drake in Des Moines, Iowa. ... SDSU had five student-athletes competing in eight events in the three-day preliminary meet.
