Brookings Parks, Recreation and Forestry officials are planning the SouthBrook Nature Park Ice Fishing Derby for next weekend.

The first-time event will be held Saturday, Feb. 20. Registration is at 12:30 p.m., with fishing from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Treats and prizes will be awarded.

Boys and girls ages 14 and under, as well as their parents, are welcome. There is no cost to participate.

Some bait and fishing rods will be available if needed. Recreation Superintendent Marc Richards said it's a good idea for participants to bring their own five-gallon bucket if possible.

Richards said organizers hope to make the derby an annual event. All South Dakota fishing regulations will be in effect, but officials encourage catch-and-release fishing at the city ponds.

The SouthBrook Nature Park is located at the old city landfill on 22nd Avenue South, just past the softball complex.
