Garden boxes for GAP earn Eagle Scout honor for Dawkins

As part of his Eagle project , Dawkins constructed four free-standing garden boxes for GAP.
Paul Dawkins will be honored by Troop 1 at a Boy Scout Eagle Court of Honor on Sunday, Feb. 7, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Brookings.

Everyone is welcome.

The Eagle Scout award is the highest award the Boy Scouts of America offer to Scouts. Dawkins, 18, will join the rank few Boy Scouts achieve.

The scout must complete 12 required merit badges and at least nine other merit badges plus organize and complete a service project that benefits the community, school, or church.

Dawkins, working with Jan Stange, director of Great After-School Place, designed, planned, lead the construction of four free standing garden boxes for use on-site at the various GAP sites. Three of the boxes were 3 feet by 4 feet by one foot in dimension and the remaing box was 3 feet by 3 feet by 1 foot.

Dawkins started in scouting as a Cub Scout with Pack 4 at age 6. After earning the Arrow of Light, the highest honor in Cub Scouting, he joined Boy Scout Troop 1. David Hafenbreidel is the current Scout Master for Troop 1.

Dawkins has held the positions of scribe, quartermaster, assistant patrol leader and junior assistant scoutmaster. His troop is chartered by the Methodist Men's Brotherhood.

Dawkins plans to attend Dakota State University in the fall to pursue a degree in computer science and computer network security.
