Snowblowers have become an all-too-common sight this winter, but it isn't often you see one being used on a roof. Dave Flatten of Flandreau took extra measures after the latest snowstorm to make sure his roof at the Flandreau Locker would be able to deal with any additional snow load. This winter has made excess rooftop snow an issue for many; besides the sheer weight of the snow on their roofs, many area residents are finding "ice dams" along the edges and in the valleys of their roofs. These ice dams can be responsible for expensive leaks on the inside of a home. Homeowners are also encouraged check roof vents to make sure they are not frozen or drifted over. With four more inches in the latest snowfall and plenty of winter ahead, Flatten may want to leave his snow blower up on the roof. (Incidentally, the Flandreau business owner first tried snow removal the old-fashioned way with a shovel but decided to put a little more horsepower to work. He hoisted the snow machine onto the roof with a forklift.)
