These local educators like their summer jobs

BROOKINGS "Summertime and the livin' is easy." So says the classic musical "Porgy and Bess."

Some people see livin' easy as the envied lot of teachers and other educators on a nine-month contract, but many of them would say it just ain't so. They work other jobs during the summer.

Richard "Rich" Brubakken, principal of Brookings' Medary Elementary School for the past 26 years, has for the past four years-plus worked a second job at Bozied Gas Stop in Brookings. In addition to his summer employment at the crossroads convenience store, he "works occasional shifts on weekends as well." During the summer, Brubakken works at "whatever they need; I work overnights, evenings, days." While he usually works part-time, his summer schedule can include full-time employment at times.
