BROOKINGS – During this year’s fall choir concert at Brookings High School, director Denise Perry noticed something unusual: Her audience had standing room only. The school’s newly remodeled Bell Auditorium holds 540 seats and that’s usually been plenty for the fall and spring concerts, which typically attract family members and choral music lovers.

Perry has a good idea why the crowd is growing. Choir enrollment has been “just exploding” since she began teaching at the high school in fall 2009. Already, 30 more students are signed up to sing in choir next year than this year.

“The year before I started there were 85 (students in choir) and next year we have 181 registered. So, it’s over doubled in just that amount of time,” Perry said.
