BROOKINGS – A finance program for Brookings High School students that is funded by a Brookings bank seems to be gaining traction.

BHS teacher Laura Quail leads the Personal Finance classes that are using the new Financial Scholars Program. First Bank & Trust of Brookings funds the program, through a partnership with the South Dakota Bankers Association.

BHS first offered Financial Scholars last spring. This semester – which is about to end – 39 of Quail’s 48 Personal Finance students completed the program, which takes an average of six hours. Quail said students did the work on their own time, outside of class. It’s optional but students do receive a small amount of class credit for successfully completing it.
