• Blood marrow donation event offers chance to save a life

BROOKINGS – It may seem odd that taking a few minutes out of your day could be the first step toward saving a life, but it’s true. Just ask Mary Bjerke.

On a trip to Kansas City to visit her brother, Bjerke tagged along when he went to a community drive for the National Marrow Donor Program. A couple swabs of her mouth, a little paperwork and she was signed up.

“I didn’t think much about it after that,” said Bjerke, the mayor of Volga.
