BROOKINGS – Since Gov. Bill Janklow set it in motion 14 years ago, Brookings County Youth Mentoring Program (BCYMP) has broadened its focus and greatly expanded the number of kids it serves.

School resource officer Joe Fishbaugher has been involved from the beginning, when the program was funded by the Department of Corrections and organized here by the two Juvenile Corrections agents (JCA). Each JCA had about 30 kids on his caseload across several different counties.

“And that’s who was being mentored. Now you can see, just what we have pending is 60 boys. So that’s how big it’s grown,” Fishbaugher said.

The program already includes 114 mentor-mentee matches. Sixty boys and 50 girls are now waiting for a mentor.
