• Can a South Dakotan be a 'snow bird'?
BROOKINGS – In a maximum of 600 words, can you write down the quality – or qualities – that define what makes a South Dakotan?
That question and how to answer it was the challenge raised and responded to in a book by the same name – "What Makes A South Dakotan?" The end result is a book by about 165 present and former South Dakotans.
Editors John Miller, a retired South Dakota State University history professor living in Brookings, Lenora Hudson of Rapid City, and members of the South Dakota Humanities Council put the pieces of what might be considered a multi-faceted human puzzle into a book with key one-word identifying chapters that include: characteristics, diversity, biography, people, relationships, place, towns, weather, activities, memory and culture.
