• Illness ‘a learning experience’ for local family
BROOKINGS – Tara Hietpas knew something was wrong. She was running a persistent low-grade fever and she was always tired. Her vague symptoms led her to believe she had a virus. What she has is far more deadly.
Hietpas has myelodysplastic syndrome, an illness that hampers the bone marrow’s production of blood cells. Untreated, it can lead to acute myeloid leukemia, a type of cancer. This particular illness was in the news recently when “Good Morning America” host Robin Roberts was undergoing a bone marrow transplant.
