The Sioux Falls man accused of stabbing a Brookings man at a Jan. 24 house party made a court appearance on Wednesday for a bond hearing.
Mark Running Sr., 24, is facing a charge of attempted murder in the first degree and two alternate counts of aggravated assault.
He's suspected of stabbing a 21-year-old Brookings man at a house party in the 100 block of Sixth Avenue South on Sunday, Jan. 24.
BPD Lt. Derrick Powers said a female called police at 1:34 a.m., shortly after the stabbing occurred. She said a male was stabbed three to four times by another male, and she was taking the victim to the Brookings hospital .
Powers said the suspect stabbed the victim in the chest and stomach area and then fled the scene.
A U.S. marshal arrested Running earlier this week in Sioux City, where he waived extradition and was transported back to Brookings.
Murder in the first degree is a Class 2 felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison and a $50,000 fine, and aggravated assault is a Class 3 felony with a maximum penalty of 15 years is prison and a $30,000 fine. Running has completed an application and does qualify for a court-appointed attorney, Judge Lee Ann Pierce said in court Wednesday. Serious charges
Pierce then asked for comments before setting Running's bond.
State's Attorney Clyde Calhoon said the current charges against Running are very serious, and the defendant has one prior felony conviction on his record.
Calhoon said he plans to file habitual criminal information against Running, enhancing each of the new charges against him by one degree. That means, if convicted, the attempted murder charge could be punishable by as much as 50 years in prison.
The prosecutor said Running is presently facing a Minnehaha County charge of unauthorized possession of a controlled substance , for which he bonded out of jail in early January.
Calhoon also noted that the victim in the stabbing was in serious condition and spent some time in Avera McKennan hospital in Sioux Falls for treatment. The prosecutor asked for a significant cash bond.
Running said he's a longtime South Dakota resident and has most recently been living and working in Sioux Falls.
Pierce then set Running's bond at $30,000 cash. If he does bond out, he must sign a waiver of extradition.
Running's next court appearance is set for 9 a.m. Monday.
