A 22-year-old Brookings man has admitted to charges that he was in possession last April of videos depicting child pornography .
A Brookings County grand jury indicted Michael J. Lorenzen in May on 21 counts of possession of child pornography .
In exchange for the defendant's guilty pleas to five charges Monday, State's Attorney Clyde Calhoon agreed to dismiss the other 16. The prosecutor also reserved the opportunity to make a statement at sentencing later this month.
Court documents say that authorities found the 21 video files on Lorenzen's laptop computer on or about April 8.
Knowingly possessing a visual depiction of a minor under the age of 18 years engaging in a prohibited sexual act or in the simulation of such act is a Class 4 felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine for each count. That means Lorenzen could be facing as much as 50 years in prison and a $100,000 fine.
After accepting Lorenzen's guilty pleas, Circuit Judge Tim Tucker ordered a pre-sentence investigation, including a psychosexual evaluation.
Sentencing has been scheduled for Nov. 30. Lorenzen is free on personal recognizance until then.
