BROOKINGS – A young woman showed up at the Brookings hospital Emergency Department about 4 a.m. Sunday for injuries she said she received in a car accident.
While the injuries of Elkton resident Sarah Vansambeek, 20, were judged to be minor, the driver of the car in the accident could be facing some troubles of his own.
It took sheriff’s deputies until 10 p.m. Sunday to track down Phillip Miles, a 24-year-old Mitchell resident, and charge him with reckless driving and failure to report an accident.
As officers put together the story, the accident occurred at the intersection of 210th Street and 479th Avenue, east of Brookings.
A 2002 Cadillac DeVille, driven by Miles, was traveling west on 210 Street when the car came to a T-type intersection. Miles failed to negotiate the turn and the car went through the intersection and hit an embankment.
Investigators said the Cadillac had about $7,000 in damage as a result of the crash.
They indicated that alcohol may have been a factor in the accident.
The accident remains under investigation by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
