BROOKINGS – An unlocked door was apparently an invitation to a burglar who walked off with a television and a DVD player Monday afternoon.
Brookings police took a report Monday of a theft at an apartment in the 700 block of 13th Avenue. It’s believed the theft took place between 2 and 3 p.m. Monday when the owner briefly left the building. The apartment door was not locked.
The missing items were valued at about $200, according to Lt. Derrick Powers of the Brookings Police.
Residents can protect their valuables by simply locking their doors, Powers said. The arrival of warmer weather typically sees an increase in crimes of opportunity, and cars, homes and garages are prime targets for thieves. It only takes a few minutes for someone to open a door and pick up an armload of valuable items. “If you want to keep it,” Powers said, “make sure you lock it up.”
