‘Lottery winner’ loses $2,300

BROOKINGS – “You shouldn’t have to pay money to receive money,” says Brookings Police Lt. Derrick Powers. “If you’ve won a prize, you shouldn’t have to pay money to get it.”

That’s the advice Powers has given consistently to Brookings residents who’ve been conned out of money by scammers. But it was advice that was unheeded by a 71-year-old Brookings man whose “million-dollar lottery prize” cost him $2,300 of his own money.

Powers said the man reported he was contacted last week by an individual who told him that he’d won nearly a million dollars and a car in a lottery drawing.
