Sleeping driver hits tree, sign

BROOKINGS – Hit and run charges are pending against a young Brookings driver who says he fell asleep at the wheel early Monday morning.

Tyler DeJong, a 21-year-old Brookings resident, could be charged with leaving the scene of an accident after he allegedly drove away from a single-car crash at the corner of 16th Avenue and Robin Road.

A resident on the street called police at about 2:13 a.m. to report the sound of a loud crash and a vehicle racing its engine.
