BROOKINGS – Several counterfeit travelers checks were passed recently in Brookings, and city police are reminding merchants to be on guard for the funny money.

The incident was reported Wednesday when the bank returned the checks.
A customer offered travelers checks totaling $200 for various items he was purchasing at the convenience store, Powers said.
