Spitting, swing at cop lands city man in jail

BROOKINGS – What started Saturday night as a mission of mercy for Brookings police turned into something entirely different – and for one Brookings man, the evening ended with charges against him for throwing a punch at an officer and spitting on him, for slugging a woman and for disorderly conduct.

The incident started about 11:15 p.m. Saturday when someone called to ask police for a welfare check on a man lying on the sidewalk at Main Avenue and Fourth Street.

When the officer arrived, he found a young man on the sidewalk, conscious and appearing to be resting.
