BROOKINGS – Brookings police are on the lookout for a Jolly Green Giant.
Or at least a very hungry vegetarian.
Officers took a theft report Saturday from a disappointed gardener at the Douglas Chittick Community Gardens: last week someone hauled off $60 to $70 worth of his cabbages, beets and carrots.
The victim suspects that the thief purloined the produce sometime between last Thursday and Saturday.
There are more than 500 plots at the community gardens on the Highway 14 Bypass, and most of them have shut down for the season. But root crops like carrots and beets, and hardy plants like cabbages, are still “ripe for the pickin’.”
Police have no suspects in the garden raid. Rabbits have been ruled out, however.
