VOLGA – Fifty to 60 bales of hay went up in smoke Wednesday, but Volga and Bruce firefighters were able to keep the flames from spreading to nearby field crops.
Dave Jacobson, deputy chief of the Volga Fire Department, said about “14 to 15 firefighters and six or seven trucks” were called to the scene of the fire, several miles north of Volga on 465th Avenue.
The Bruce Fire Department assisted the Volga team in the effort.
Jacobson said the call came in about 3:30 p.m., and it was feared the fire would spread to a nearby field of soybeans. Crews were able to contain the blaze, however, and no crops or buildings were threatened.
The last of the firefighters left the scene about 8:40 p.m.
The deputy chief said the cause of the fire is undetermined and probably will remain so. A spark could have ignited the dry grass, or there may have been spontaneous combustion, he said.
No damage estimate was given for the lost hay.
