• Second church burgled, same perp?

BROOKINGS – "We aren't ruling out the possibility of it being connected to the other church burglary," Lt. Derrick Powers, of the Brookings Police Department, said.

"This one occured around the time frame of the other one, it looks like possibly different nights."

This second church break-in and burglarly, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church at 629 Ninth Ave., was reported shortly after noon Saturday, May 26. Powers said initial entry was gained through an unlocked door.

Once inside, forced entry to an inner office was made by breaking a window. A small amount of money was stolen. Nothing else was reported missing.

The May 25 edition of the Register reported that "a burglar made off with an undisclosed amount of cash (May 22) after rifling through offices in the Brookings Wesleyan Church (at 1420 Orchard Dr.)."

Powers said there are no suspects in either burglary, and both remain under investigation.

Anyone with information about either case is asked to contact the BPD at 692-2113, or contact Crime Stoppers anonymous by visiting www.brookingscrimestoppers.com or by calling 692-STOP (7867).
