Accused denies car chase

A 28-year-old Brookings man has denied stealing a car, running from police and other charges that allegedly resulted from a June 26 traffic stop.
Yi Qiang Chen is facing felony charges of grand theft and aggravated eluding of a law enforcement officer and misdemeanor counts of reckless driving and second-degree petty theft.

Tip leads police to attempted storage burglaries

An early Tuesday morning tip led police to what appears to be the attempted burglaries of two storage units in Brookings.
Brookings Police Lt. Derrick Powers said officers were called to the 2300 block of 22nd Avenue South at 4:21 a.m. Tuesday.

Vandal carves into roof of school

Leaking water damaged a classroom at Hillcrest Elementary last weekend after someone carved into the roof of the school.
Brookings Police Lt. Derrick Powers said a school employee discovered the mess Monday morning, and authorities were called there at 8:20 a.m.

Accused rapist appears in court

A Brookings resident who discovered an intoxicated stranger in his home early Monday morning became the victim of another crime not long after.
When the stranger was told to leave the house in the 600 block of Ninth Street, he did so by stealing the resident's SUV.

A 23-year-old North Dakota man was arrested for public indecency this weekend after he was spotted naked in downtown Brookings.

Two die in car-pickup collision near White

A young man and a young mother were killed Friday evening in a two-vehicle collision east of White.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol identified the victims as 21-year-old Jordan Hochstein and 25-year-old Megan Vostad. Both were residents of White.
Vostad's 9-month-old son, Lane, and her husband, Justin, escaped injury in the collision.

Drug arrest at post office

Police arrested a Brookings man at gunpoint Friday morning outside the local post office.
