Jackrabbit track and field signs six

South Dakota State head track and field coach Rod DeHaven announced six prep athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to enroll at SDSU and compete for the Jackrabbits in 2010.

"These six young women are an outstanding base to what we believe will be a very strong recruiting class," said DeHaven. "We have some outstanding quality in this group which will be key for us during the 2010-11 season. Ashley Odegaard has great versatility which will help us in the short relays and the long jump. Mary Wirth is one of the better high jumpers in state history. Kali Olson is good athlete that has been getting better every season. Mariah Hofer will be one of our top distance runners right away. Erica Meyer has proven to be outstanding in the relays and the 400 for Rosholt. Ashley Wagner is only starting to realize her potential as a high jumper." Ashley Odegaard, Brookings

Brookings High School Odegaard has been a valuable part of the Bobcats' track and field program for the past five years. She has excelled as a sprinter, placing in the 100 meters and anchoring many of the relays for Brookings. Last year, she powered the Bobcats to the state title in the 4 x 100 meter relay. Odegaard has also emerged as one of the state's top long jumpers, where she has pushed her personal best to 17 feet, 11.75 inches. Her personal bests on the track are 12.45 seconds and 26.16 seconds for the 100 meters and 200 meters, respectively.

Ashley is also a Varsity Scholar award winner, a member of the Bobcat basketball team, a volunteer for Special Olympics and a member of FCA. Mary Wirth, Sioux Falls

Lincoln High School Wirth is the two-time defending state champion in the high jump, where she boasts a personal best of 5 feet, 8 inches. Last season, she also placed third in the triple jump at the state meet with a mark of 36 feet. She has also placed at the state meet in the long jump during the past two seasons.

When not competing in track, she is involved with softball and dance. Mary is also a scholar athlete and a member of the National Honor Society with a GPA of 3.995. Her older brother Zach competed in Track and Field at SDSU from 2005-2008 . Kali Olson, Lisbon, N.D.

Lisbon High School Olson is the two-time defending North Dakota Class B champion in the high jump. She established her personal best of 5 feet, 6 inches last season. Kali is also involved with the volleyball and basketball teams at Lisbon. Academically, she's a 4.0 student and a member of the National Honor Society. Mariah Hofer, Yankton

Yankton High School Hofer is an all-state performer in cross country and track and field. She has been a key contributor to the success of the Gazelles' power house cross country teams over the past four years. Mariah was the 2009 ESD Conference cross country champion and followed that up with a fourth-place finish in Class AA State Meet. During her freshman and sophomore campaigns, she also recorded topfive finishes at the state cross country meet. On the track, Hofer has helped the Gazelles to win the last two 4 x 800 meter relays at the state track and field meet. She has recorded personal bests of 5 minutes, 8.1 seconds in the 1,600 meters and 11:17.6 in the 3,200 meters. Last spring, she finished third in the 1,600 meters and fourth in the 3,200 meters.

Hofer, an outstanding student is a member of the National Honor Society and plans to major in Nursing at SDSU. Erica Meyer, Rosholt

Rosholt High School Meyer has been a versatile performer for Rosholt over the past four years running races from 100 meters up to 1,600 meters. During that time she has helped the team to three consecutive runner-up finishes at the state meet in Class B. Last spring, she was part of two state champion relay teams, including a 4 x 200 meter relay team that established the state meet record Erica also has finished fourth in the 400 meters the past two sea sons at the state meet, recording a personal best of 59.2 seconds.

Meyer is also a member of the volleyball, cross country and bas ketball teams at Rosholt. She is a member of the National Honor Society and plans to pursue a Nursing degree at SDSU. Ashley Wagner, Montrose

West Central High School Wagner is a two-time state place winner in the high jump, finishing fifth at last year's state class A meet. The 5-10 jumper has a personal best of 5 feet, 2 inches in the high jump. Wagner runs cross country in the fall and also long jumps and triple jumps during the track season.

Wagner is ranked number one in her high school class, carrying a grade point average of 4.103. Ashley is a member of the National Honor Society and participated in Girls' State last spring.

At SDSU, she plans to pursue a degree in Animal Science.

"We will continue to add to this class which we hope will grow to 10-15 athletes by the time school starts next fall," said DeHaven. "We are also still working on the men's recruiting class which typically takes longer to assemble.

"We have a limited number of athletes graduating this spring, which will limit the number of incoming freshman to next year's team."
