Manager John Larson of Lake Norden, described the South Dakota Rushmores' efforts "a complete turnaround ," after the South Dakotans completed a doubleheader sweep on Tuesday.
Harry Green of Peoria, Ariz., pitched the completegame 10-2 victory in the morning game against Sacramento. Green allowed nine hits and only two walks in the win. He was backed up by some stellar defensive plays as the Rushmores turned four double plays in the first inning Astoria's Phil Trooien went to Lew Ingalls of Huntsville, Ala., to Myron Cantrell of Kennesaw, Ga., twin killing; in the fourth another Trooien to Ingalls to Cantrell; in the sixth an Ingalls to Trooien to Cantrell DP and in the eighth an Ingalls to Trooien to Cantrell double play.
Cantrell finished 2-for-2 with a double to lead the Rushmores' offense. Sioux Falls' Howard Bich and Bob Morris of BelAir, Mary., were 2-for-4 and Ingalls was 2-for-5 . Sloan, Iowa's Ev Bradshaw and Kent Rolfing of Rochester Hills, Mich., also singled.
The Rushmores turned the tables on the Padres Tuesday as they avenged Monday's shellacking with a 20-2 win.
Randy Crowell of Unionville, Tenn., pitched the first seven innings, giving up 11 hits, two runs, a walk and striking out two. Joe Pyle of Dunwoody, Ga., pitched the eighth and struck out one. Dave Wheeler of Herndon, Virg., worked the ninth and allowed one hit.
Trooien and Nick Pashulka of Edmonton, Alb., led the hitting attack, each going 4-for-5 . One of Pashulka's hits was a double. Ingalls, Bradshaw and Cantrell each tallied three hits. Morris, Bich and Jack Sayles of Custer each had two hits. Pyle, Larson, and Jimmy Jackson of Fayetteville, Ga., also hit safely.
The Rushmores play Chicago at 10 a.m. on Thursday.
