South Dakota State University golfer Trent Peterson has been honored as The Summit League Men's Athlete of the Month for August and September, league officials announced Wednesday.
A senior from Eagan, Minn., Peterson posted individual runner-up finishes in all three of the Jackrabbits' tournaments in September, losing by one stroke at both the Nebraska and Cleveland State invitationals tournaments in which SDSU won the team title. At the Nebraska tournament, Peterson shot a 4-under-par 140 (69-71 ), before shooting a 213 (67-72-74 ) at the Cleveland State tournament. He also shot a 2-under-par 214 (70-71-73 ) in his second-place finish at Kansas.
In three tournaments, Peterson averaged 70.9 strokes per round, tops in The Summit League for the fall season . He was also 9-under-par in those eight rounds and shot par or better in six of the eight, with a season-low score of 67. Entering the season, SDSU had never won a team title at a Division I tournament and the team was ranked as high as 56th in the country. Peterson was ranked as high as 34th in Golfweek's individual national rankings during the month.
SDSU closes out the fall portion of its schedule Oct. 20-21 at the Santa Clara Invitational in San Jose, Calif.
