Geoff Mead repeated as tournament champion , Trent Peterson recorded his third consecutive runner-up finish and the South Dakota State men's golf team picked up its second win of the season Tuesday at the Cleveland State Invitational.
The Jackrabbits were the only team to break the 300 mark during a wet and rainy third round at the 7,215-yard , par-72 Sand Ridge Golf Course. Their 5-over-par 293 gave them a two-day total of 870 (287-290-293 ) and a seven-shot win.
Mead, who became the first individual in school history to win a Division I tournament at last year's CSU Invite, overcame a three-shot deficit and jumped from a tie for third into the top spot. The senior from Rapid City carded a 1-under 71 in the final round and edged Peterson by a shot with a 4-under 212 total. Mead shot 73-68 during Monday's first and second rounds.
Peterson closed with a 2-over 74 and was second with a three-round score of 3-under 213 (67-72-74 ).
Tim Kalil stepped up big for the Jacks on Tuesday, closing with a 3-under 69, the low score of the final round. That got him into a tie for ninth at 220 (75-76-69 ).
Nolan Meyer provided the team with its fourth score 79 and ended up tied for 39th with teammate Justin Jenkins at 229. Meyer added rounds of 76 and 74 in the first two rounds, while Jenkins carded 72-76-81 for the tournament.
The CSU Invite marked the first team competition of the year for both Meyer and Jenkins . Meyer competed as an individual in his first appearance of the season at the Kansas Fall Invitational , while Jenkins missed the first two events while recovering from an injury.
Longwood (Va.), the coleader with SDSU entering the final round, finished second at 877 (292-285-300 ), while host Cleveland State was third with an 882 (296-283-303 ) total.
Individually, Cleveland State's Jacob Scott, the leader entering the final round, fell to third with a three-round total of 214 (70-68-76 ).
Mead and Peterson keep adding to their already impressive highlights at South Dakota State.
With back-to-back victories at the Cleveland State Invitational , Mead now tops the school's all-time wins list at the Division I level with two. He has three top-seven finishes this season.
Peterson, who was ranked as high as 34th by Golfweek but is currently 50th is off to a fast start with three runner-up finishes in as many events this year. Peterson is the only other Jackrabbit to win a Division I tournament when he was medalist at the Beu/Mussatto Invitational (Western Illinois) last season.
After entering the year with no Division I team wins, the 59th-ranked Jackrabbits now have two. They also won Nebraska's Fairway Club Invitational on Sept. 8-9 . In its other event, SDSU led after two rounds before placing fifth in the Kansas Fall Invitational on Sept. 15-16 .
The CSU Invite was, however , the first three-round tourney win for the Jacks, as the Fairway Club Invite was shortened to two rounds due to rain.
The Jackrabbits have two tournaments remaining in the fall season. They play in the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on Oct. 4-5 in Palm Desert, Calif., and the Santa Clara Invitational on Oct. 20-21 in San Jose, Calif.
