WATERTOWN – Sioux Valley pulled out a pair of close sets to finish off Pine Ridge and move into the winner’s bracket in the Class A State Volleyball Tournament on Thursday at the Watertown Civic Arena.

The seventh-seeded Cossacks won by the set scores of 22-25, 25-14, 29-27 and 26-24.

“We needed to get our feet wet and realize that we could do it,” Sioux Valley head coach Jill Vincent said of the first set. “I really think we could have taken that first set but my girls needed to believe that they could.

“So in the second set, I think they had their engines turning. That was kind of a fun set.”

Tied at one set apiece, the Cossacks persevered in extra points in the final two stanzas; thanks in part to a career night from Mariah VanderWal. Playing opposite of Haley Hillestad, the sophomore came up with big kills in clutch situations."
