• Brookings scores four runs in seventh inning to take control

BROOKINGS – Good plate discipline, along with a tough exterior, were the keys for Brookings Cubby’s during its four-run seventh inning Wednesday night.

Trailing 3-2, Brookings scored four times in the decisive inning without the benefit of a hit en route to a 6-3 victory over Milroy Irish in an amateur baseball game at Bob Shelden Field.

Cubby’s chased a pair of Milroy relievers, drawing seven free passes – including four hit batsmen and three walks – and taking advantage of a pair of wild pitches.

After getting a flyout to open the inning, Milroy reliever Tyler Alcorn hit Zach Thomas with a pitch, walked Chris Maks and hit Andy Lee to load the bases. Marcus Daniel then drew a walk, forcing in Thomas to tie the game at 3-all.

Milroy went to Dan Frank after that; and his wild pitch allowed Maks to score, giving Cubby’s the lead for good at 4-3.

Following a walk to Brad Isaacson, Derek West recorded a sacrifice fly to left that scored Lee and made it 5-3. Kolton Emery was hit by a pitch to again load the bases, when Daniel scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-3. Nick Andrews was hit by a pitch after that.

Milroy went back to the bullpen, bringing in Cody Mather, who induced a ground out on his first pitch to get the Irish out of the inning.

Emery threw three innings in relief to earn the win, allowing one run on three hits, with five strikeouts. He tossed a perfect eighth inning, striking out a pair of batters.

Zach Briggs, who started the game at shortstop, struck out the side in the ninth to earn the save.

Thomas led the Cubby’s offense with two hits and a pair of RBIs. Emery also had two hits.

Brookings used timely hitting to take a 2-0 lead early.

Emery led off the first with a single, stole second and scored on Thomas’ two-out double. In the third, Andrews reached on an error with two outs and scored after back-to-back singles by Briggs and Thomas.

Milroy leadoff hitter Dominic Dolan finished 4-for-5 with two doubles.

Isaac Dolan scored on a wild pitch in the fourth and added an RBI triple in the seventh; and Tyler Peterson notched a run-scoring single in between in the fifth.

Both starting pitchers gave their team a chance. Brookings’s Christian Larson allowed two runs – one earned – on three hits, with five strikeouts and four walks, in five innings. Milroy’s Isaac Dolan gave up two runs – one earned – on seven hits, with six strikeouts and a walk, over the first six innings.

Brookings Cubby’s (4-6) plays host to the Sioux Falls Saints tonight at 7:30 at Shelden.
