YANKTON – Brookings Post 74 opened the American Legion baseball season with a pair of wins at the Lewis & Clark Wood Bat Classic on Friday.
Matt Thomas tossed a shutout during the Bandits’ 1-0 victory over South Sioux City in the opener. Brookings beat Dell Rapids, 10-5, in its second game.
Brookings (2-0) has two more pool-play games today, taking on host Yankton at 10:30 a.m. and Spearfish at 12:45 p.m. The tournament concludes with bracket play Sunday.

Thomas allowed just two hits and Austin Koenig provided the Bandits with an RBI hit in the victory.
Skyler Cary led the Brookings offense with a pair of hits.

The Bandits scored six runs on six hits in the first inning and pushed the lead to 10-1 after three frames in the win.
Thomas and Cary both singled to open the first and Landon Busch followed with a walk to load the bases.
Kelby Beste then hit a two-run double to open the scoring. Riley Bullington followed with an RBI groundout to make it 3-0.
With two outs, Garret Gerstner notched an RBI double, Kyle Krogman stroked a run-scoring single and Thomas – the 10th hitter in the inning – tacked on an RBI single to put the Bandits ahead by a 6-0 margin.
After Dell Rapids scored in the bottom of the first, Brookings added three runs in the second. Gerstner was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing in Busch. With two outs, Beste scored on a wild pitch and Krogman tallied his second RBI single of the game to make it 9-1.
In the third, Busch reached via a one-out single and scored on Cody Shepardson’s two-out hit – making it 10-1.
Dell Rapids scored three runs in the fourth and one in the sixth to provide for the final margin of 10-5.
Krogman led Brookings’ 11-hit attack with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate. Thomas and Shepardson had two hits apiece.
Matt Pejsa earned the pitching win, allowing four runs on six hits, with four walks and three strikeouts, in 3 2/3 innings. Trevor Puetz gave up one run on four hits, with two walks and two strikeouts, over the next 1 2/3 innings. Beste struck out both batters he faced in the bottom of the sixth.
For Dell Rapids, Collin Carst, Weston Hanson and Matt Colbeck each had two hits and an RBI.
Michael Schmidt took the loss on the mound, giving up 10 runs – eight earned – on 11 hits, with five walks and a strikeout, in six innings.
